On-Call Traffic Engineering Design
BCS 2008-05A-MdSHA, OOTS - 2016
SWA has prepared over 90 task assignments on these contracts.
Work has included the following:
Preparation of traffic engineering design plans for area wide (on-call) contractors and as inserts into major highway design projects such as traffic signal design, signing and pavement marking, lighting, signal interconnect and signal system design, on-site support, studies, ITS and Maintenance of Traffic design.
Traffic Signal Design, 50 Assignments
Signal design assignments consisted of preparing traffic signal reconstruction, new traffic signal or signal modification plans such as pedestrian upgrades, LED upgrades, or phase changes. Signal design plans included preparation of base plans, as-builts of existing equipment including conduit capacities and equipment condition assessments, utility height measurements, identification of power source and coordination with the local utility companies, and preparation of signal designs and cost estimates. Signal design projects often included minor geometric improvements such as channelization, median adjustments, signing modifications, and ADA sidewalk ramp upgrades.
Traffic Engineering Design for Highway Improvement Projects, 14 Assignments
Prepared traffic signal and interconnect design for ultimate and temporary conditions. Coordinated with the MOT plans for temporary signal pole and interconnect placement.
Prepared signing and marking and lighting plans for ultimate conditions, prepared MOT plans. Attended project coordination meetings at SHA Office of Highway Design. Coordinated with highway, drainage, utility, E&S, structural designers / consultants, various SHA divisions, federal, county, and municipal agencies. Prepared plans, quantities and cost estimates for multiple reviews (typically 65%, 95%, and 100%). Sample projects include the MD 4 at Suitland Parkway Interchange, MD 2 at Mt. Harmony Road and MD 4 at MD 235 Intersection Improvement Projects, and MD 175 at Snowden River Parkway Park and Ride Expansion.
Lighting Design, 18 Assignments
Preparation of intersection and interchange lighting plans including field inventory, base plan preparation, photometric analysis (including tunnel analysis) voltage drop, connector kits, layout of poles, arms, conduits, quantities, cost and specs. Sample projects include I-68 Interchange in Cumberland, 4 interchanges along I-270 and I-70, isolated intersections, and Park & Ride Lot lighting projects.
ITS Designs, On-Site Traffic Engineering Support, Computer Programming / IT, Technology Assessments, 22 Assignments
Sample projects include DMS sign plan preparation, UPS / BBS As-Builts, LED Inspection Program, STAR projects (no plan preparation, verbally direct contractor in work), CCTV camera design, and the design of a wireless communication system for ITS equipment on the MD 90 bridge into Ocean City.
